SmartWater has two important Health & Safety and Compliance announcements with regards to the future use of forensic technology products and services.

1. Impending EU wide restriction on use of NMP solvent by forensic taggants companies:

EU regulation 2018/588 of 18th April 2018 relating to the forthcoming banning of solutions (including forensic taggants) containing concentrations higher than 0.3% of 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solvent present within the ‘adhesive’ (due to the potential risk to an unborn child).

Whilst NMP is currently used by a number forensic taggant companies, please be advised that SmartWater does not use NMP in any of our forensic products. SmartWater will therefore remain fully compliant with all EU Health and Safety legislation.

2. SmartWater is compliant with the new Forensic Science Regulator’s Codes of Practice (Codes):

SmartWater’s analytical process has been accredited by UKAS as being compliant with the requirements of the Forensic Science Regulator (FSR) Codes of Practice.

This accreditation is extremely important, as products that are not accredited risk being excluded by the Courts as evidence, making them a waste of money.

As from 1st October 2017, it is a requirement that most categories of forensic science, including laboratory analysis of forensic taggants, is both accredited to ISO 17025 and that the scope of ISO 17025 accreditation includes the FSR Codes of Practice.

This is highly significant because the Criminal Procedure Rules require that non-compliance with the FSR Codes of Practice is declared in any report or statement given to the Courts.

Therefore, there would be a risk that evidence generated by non-compliant forensic products and services would be ruled as inadmissible, or attract adverse comment from the Courts, potentially resulting in a reduction in the value of the evidence.

Thankfully, because of this accreditation, no such risk applies to SmartWater’s products or services.

SmartWater continues to maintain it’s 100% conviction rate and build on hundreds of convictions, with absolute confidence.
