RAILWAY - PROJECTS AND ROUTES

Having worked in the rail sector since 2010, we have an established track record for crime reduction on railway routes and projects. All SmartWater investigators are fully qualified to operate trackside and have the necessary skills and expertise to deliver a service you can rely on.

We offer a range of products and services to improve both security and safety on the rail network. This can significantly benefit your business by improving commuter confidence, preventing theft and trespass-related delays and reducing industry-imposed fines – helping you to make considerable financial savings. Our offering is underpinned by a patented crime-prevention strategy which limits opportunities for criminal activity on the railway, including:

THEFT

TRESPASS

GRAFITTI

VANDALISM

KNOW YOUR RISK

We take the time to identify the vulnerabilities faced by your project or route, providing an enhanced understanding of risk.

This allows you to concentrate time and resources where they will have the most impact and maximise your security budget. In some circumstances this approach removes the need for expensive, labour intensive measures such as 24/7 manned guarding. We help you to achieve this in a number of ways:

Crime-mapping:
SmartWater analysts assess your historic crime data,
searching for hotspots, patterns and trends, thereby
identifying areas of the network deemed ‘most at risk’.

Vulnerability studies:
SmartWater investigators carry out trackside threat assessments to gather intelligence and identify vulnerabilities, such as damaged fencing, access routes used by criminals and items most likely to be stolen.

Targeting receivers:
SmartWater investigators accompany police officers on visits to scrap dealers and recyclers to educate dealers and restrict the resale of stolen goods by searching for SmartWater-marked metals.

Police liaison:
We will liaise with British Transport Police and regional forces, establishing close ties, sharing information and maximising community engagement opportunities.

PRODUCTS TO DETER AND DETECT CRIME

SmartWater maximises opportunities to both deter and detect crime on the rail network. By combining threat assessments with a true understanding of risk, we can help you minimise wastage by ensuring your security product are fit for purpose and deployed in the right place at the right time. On your behalf we can rapidly deploy security measures that require little or no maintenance:

SmartWater forensic marking products hold Grade A External classification as part of a Publicly Available Specification published by the British Standards Institution (PAS 820:2012). This means our forensic products have been independently tested to last the equivalent of 5 years in external weather conditions.

TECHNICAL MANAGEMENT AND SUPPORT

SmartWater also offers a dedicated support strategy to oversee the management and deployment of all route or project-owned technical equipment, such as tremblers and mobile CCTV. This ensures that all equipment is fit for purpose and forms part of a fully auditable evidential chain so that deployments can be used to assist criminal convictions. The service also includes:

“LNW (LONDON NORTH-WEST) HAD A VERY DEFINITE CABLE THEFT PROBLEM AND WHAT SMARTWATER ENABLED US TO DO, WITH BTP (BRITISH TRANSPORT POLICE), IS TO ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.”

TOM MANNING, PERFORMANCE MANAGER
(NETWORK RAIL)

REDUCING CABLE THEFT

When strategically deployed on the London to North West LNW mainline, SmartWater helped Network Rail to achieve the following reductions in cable theft

54.9%

the percentage of delayed minutes slashed on the LNW line

54.7%

the reduction in live cable theft on the LNW line

53

the number of arrests made on the LNW line as a result of SmartWater-related operations.

The use of SmartWater was responsible for ending a series of attacks that had the potential to cause major disruptions for commuters across the potteries. Their investigators also provided invaluable assistance to BTP that resulted in the arrest and conviction of those responsible. The service provided by SmartWater is of huge value to us and they are a key strategic partner in our ongoing fight against cable theft

MEL HILLMAN, PLANT MAINTENANCE ENGINEER, NETWORK RAIL
