Be smart this winter

Town centre neighborhood watch schemes are encouraging residents to pick up a free security marking pen to protect their belongings this Christmas.

The free UV pens are available from neighborhood watch coordinator Adrian Dolan to anyone who lives in Castle Ward or Peasholm areas. Mr. Dolan said: “Security marking is always recommended. Mark any new items you get this Christmas, as well as mobile phones and electronic games too.”

Mr. Dolan also has ‘SmartWater’ which is a more advanced system used to help retrieve stolen goods and trace them back to their rightful owners — for £15. It operates as a forensic coding system; similar in concept to a DNA profile It is not easily detectable under normal light conditions but glows under UV light. Mr. Dolan said: “The presence of SmartWater is a highly effective deterrent of theft and it is vital that potential thieves are aware that you property has been marked with SmartWater. It is important to display warning labels where they are a visible deterrent to would-be thieves” Self adhesive labels are included for display in windows and doors.

Mr. Dolan offered general advice to avoid residents becoming a victim of theft during the festive season. He said: “Take care of your money as with Christmas just around the corner, pickpockets are around. Keep purses, wallets and credit cards well concealed. Use timer switches to give your home the appearance that someone is in as the nights are drawing in quickly now.”
