Security has been improved after a series of burglaries at a South Tyneside industrial estate.
Traders at the Royal Industrial Estate, Jarrow, are being helped by police and council chiefs to protect their property from thieves. Bushes have been cut back, anti-ram bars installed, and police have stepped up patrols in the area. Letters are being sent to past offenders, warning that a return to bad behavior will see them arrested and put before the courts. Traders are being offered free SmartWater kits to help keep their property safe.
Neighbourhood Sergeant for Jarrow, Sam Rennison, said: “Working alongside our partners we are constantly looking at ways we can improve the area to make it a harder place for burglars to carry out their crimes. A lot of work has already gone on in the area, with extra patrols by police and crime prevention measures installed by South Tyneside Council. The improvements have received a positive response from traders, and offering free SmartWater kits is another step.”
Police say the improvements have already led to a fall in burglaries.
