Copper Theft
SmartWater Cutting Telecom Cable Thefts
SmartWater has been credited with cutting rates of telephone cable theft in a national hotpsot area for the crime.

Police in Doncaster revealed that thefts had dropped by nine per cent, a result BT has attributed to the deployment of SmartWater in its network.

A number of arrests have been made in the borough in recent weeks, as part of a multi-agency offensive against the massive disruption caused by theives ripping cable out of the telecoms network, with a view to selling it for its scrap value.

BT's General Manager for Cable Theft, Luke Beeson, told the Doncaster Free Press newspaper: “We are working extremely closely with British Transport Police and South Yorkshire Police who recently made a number of arrests.

“Since then we have seen a significant decline in the number of cable attacks in the Doncaster area.”

He added that the arrests had been aided largely because of the use of SmartWater.

The uniquely-coded forensic liquid is applied to various parts of the telecoms network, including cables, allowing the police to identify where the equipment was taken from and to prove ownership, providing powerful evidence for their investigations.

Once applied, SmartWater is virtually impossible to remove or destroy, even through burning.

SmartWater Technology Ltd works with its customers and partners to provide a rounded risk management approach to deterring criminals, including gathering and sharing intelligence around crime hot spots and accompanying investigators on visits to sites which might be buying the stolen metals.
